At the tender age of 20, I was disillusioned by my lonely life as a math and physics prodigy with an empty life and no hope of any spiritual truth or God …or of being loved. A powerful LSD trip had introduced me to a dizzying "fantasy" of angelic realms. Someone recommended a course at Duke University on Carl Jung's teachings.
Just before I started the class, a vivid and powerful dream arrived:
In an Ancient Alchemical laboratory/ library in the center of a lab table stands glass instruments. An alembic and an old book. I open up the pages and strange symbols are drawn. Seven vertical circles? A funny set of circuit diagrams?
Then a picture of a beautiful naked woman.
Okay. Something I understand.
Then she emerges from the book. A real woman. Laughing gently at my confusion, she explains that she can explain all of this
That I am to be an Alchemist.
And she and … Some friends … Are going to be my teachers.
In my Jungian Psychology class I learned her name was "anima" . I introduced my dream to the professor of the class. He was speechless. I asked if the class would be going inside to meet these beings.
No. No help there. Not in Jungian Psychology. 1971.
Soon in my dreams she introduced me in the inner world to THIS MAN. Funny, wise, Carl Jung.
His face touched me so deeply.
As did his infinite compassion.
As did his voice in my mind.
"Please bring the work of Alchemy back to the world. Not Analytical Psychology.
Not Jungian analysis.
"My REAL work”.
"Bringing the archetypes out of the shadow and into our daily lives as teachers guides and healers."
"Active imagination! Don't just talk to the people. Take them on a journey.
And teach them to navigate those same waters on their own."
Those were the words so tenderly spoken from his lips.
I had a twenty volume set of excuses.
He and Michaela … My divine inner angel from the lab … helped me sort through it all … Not without a few ugly detours. And a few lucky breaks.
But until now I've never seen the face of Carl Jung in the literature the way I see it in his inner study where we visit.
Until now. This picture of his youth (not available for download)
Thank you Carl Jung. For believing in me for being my lighthouse through my storms of shadow and doubt.
Thank you Dr Bradley, (Hinduism, Tibetan Buddhism) Dr. Roger Corless (Buddhism)
And so many others at Duke. Who helped fill in his teachings.
Thank you Duke University for forging my raw iron in flames of Science and the waters of Spirit…into the brilliant steel of Discernment.
And making me a researcher like my beloved Carl … A researcher of spiritual truth.
So that I might become light keeper for the great lighthouse in this world and the next that is the Alchemy Institute.
And most of all I thank my beautiful angel.
And all her winged friends. Her archetypal friends. For her love. And her wisdom.
May I always remember them.
"If I appear to see further than other men, it is because I stand upon the shoulders of giants."
Sir Isaac Newton … Master Alchemist
Thank you Carl Jung.
