Achieve Permanent Weight Loss with Alchemical Hypnosis
It’s proven: Diets lead to weight gain. The key to permanent weight loss lies in changing the subconscious metabolic programming that stubbornly sabotages our weight-loss efforts.
WHY DIETING LEADS TO WEIGHT GAIN
In an article published in the New York Times on May 8, 2016, a neuroscientist citing current scientific research explains that dieting actually leads to weight gain because dieting reduces the influence of the brain’s weight-regulation system; diets teach us to rely on rules rather than hunger to control eating. The neuroscientist, Dr Sandra Aamodt, is the author of Why Diets Make Us Fat: The Unintended Consequences of Our Obsession With Weight Loss. The research finds that a single diet increases the odds of becoming overweight by a factor of two in men and three in women.
“The root of the problem is not willpower but neuroscience. Metabolic suppression is one of several powerful tools that the brain uses to keep the body within a certain weight range, called the set point. The range, which varies from person to person, is determined by genes and life experience. When a dieters’ weight drops below it, they not only burn fewer calories but also produce more hunger-inducing hormones and find eating more rewarding.”
These research results demonstrate why, despite the diet industry's multi-million dollar promotions, the very process of dieting itself creates an undercurrent of long term weight gain for the majority of people.

UNDERSTANDING THE YO-YO EFFECT OF DIETING
As a consulting hypnotist and weight loss specialist for over 30 years, I have been acutely aware of this “yo-yo” effect of dieting for most of my career. Metabolic and neurological factors make dieting a losing experience…no, a gaining experience!...for most of its enthusiasts in the long run. Through hypnosis it is entirely possible to reset the metabolic set point of the body.
To even the casual observer it should be obvious that a 300 pound person is not starving when living on a restricted calorie diet. The conscious mind of the dieter will agree. But deep in the hypothalamus in the mid-brain of the unfortunate dieter, the alarm bells are ringing, possibly even on day 1 of the new regimen. An unconscious set point has been crossed and so the hypothalamus senses starvation is near. Signals are sent out through hormones and nerve impulses to increase appetite, start stomach secretions, open the senses to every possible signal of food and turn down metabolism in order to protect the body from starvation. Then when food is finally available, these same neurochemicals in the mid-brain signal the body to gorge itself. These habits, useful in times of real starvation, persist long after the “crisis” of hunger has passed. So dieting doesn’t work. But since current estimates indicate 60% of Americans are overweight despite the multi-billion dollar dieting industry, it’s time to debunk the dieting myth and start talking more about what does work.
HOW HYPNOSIS CAN ALTER THE PATTERNS IN THE BRAIN
Hypnosis therapy provides the effective technology for resetting the set point within the mid-brain system. Why? Because hypnosis alone, by directly contacting the subconscious mind, can access the set point within the mid-brain and alter it. I have seen this accomplished with hundreds of delighted clients who lose the weight and keep it off. Listening to a generic recording of hypnotic suggestions will not achieve the desired result. A variety of advanced and very specific hypnotic techniques are used to reset this critical alarm.
Most of us are born with a natural set point that is designed to preserve a healthy body weight. Here is an example of some early research into the set point as it functions in a healthy individual. After WW II, many army GI's were at the base waiting for demobilization. Seeing a research opportunity, the army accepted volunteers for an experiment in the effects of eating and starvation on a soldier population. One group was required to eat fatty and excessive foods. They gained up to 30 pounds. Another group, placed on a calorie restrictive diet, lost up to 30 pounds. When this “diet” was terminated the soldiers were observed, but given no instructions as to what or how much to eat during the recovery phase. To no one’s great surprise, the skinny GI's binged with pleasure and soon regained all the lost weight. Then the researchers observed that this binging behavior stopped when the previous weight was regained. Similarly, those GI's who were heavy lost most of their appetite for the rich foods they had been required to eat. Without any plan for dieting, or any sense of needing to control their eating, their bodies within weeks returned to normal. This certainly indicates that for most people there is a healthy set point that temporary dieting regimes do not affect.
DIETING AS A FORM OF PUNISHMENT
In the hypnotic state, we can locate two specific parts of the subconscious mind that commonly sabotage this natural set point.
The first is what I call the “addictive eater.” This subconscious voice is attached so deeply to the emotional need to eat that it routinely overrides the set point. This part is often fleeing from past memories of loss, betrayal, abuse, neglect, even molestation. Sometimes it is overwhelmed by current circumstances such as poverty or loneliness for which the subconscious mind has learned no better stress management tool than to eat. Dieting, of course, feels like worse than starvation to this client’s inner victim. It is robbing this inner voice of its only escape from the unbearable pain of its past or present life. The consulting hypnotist’s job is to finally listen to the pain suffered by this voice and help the client heal this part. No diet plan does this. Most psychotherapists and counselors don’t know how to access or heal this part; in fact only specially trained hypnotists are usually able to do this work effectively.
The hypnotist helps the client create an inner visualization (daydream) in which the needs of this part are addressed. This new visualization is linked to every future time the client feels a hunger that is emotional, rather than physical. It is fairly easy for the entranced client to recognize the key differences between these two states. For example one client finds a subconscious voice within, the voice of a lonely romantic living a loveless life. The client’s conscious mind “doesn’t need anyone! I’ve got a full life!” which doesn’t help this inner voice, who keeps heading for the sweet and greasy treats that alone spell relief. The unique therapeutic solution for this client may involve connecting with an inner mate (animus-Carl Jung) for a sweet fantasy of love. Maybe reconnecting with a friend or social network in the outer world will also be part of the solution. For another client whose trauma is early sexual abuse, the client can rescue their inner child from the abuse every time the ice cream cravings hit. The solutions are as unique as the memories and anxieties encountered. They do not lend themselves to the cookie cutter approach of a diet program, or self hypnosis script.
PUTTING ON WEIGHT AS A FORM OF PROTECTION
Equally common and problematic is when the set point is set artificially high within the hypothalamus by the need of some inner voice to keep extra weight on the body. Again, the possible causes of this set point error are numerous. They may include a woman who needs to be fat because she is tired of her husband’s sexual advances. This problem once accepted may lead to couple’s counseling or divorce. Or a client may have a subconscious belief after a violent and dangerous childhood that being as big as possible is the only way to stay safe from abusers who hurt small children. Only by reprogramming the subconscious with the image of a strong healthy warrior of an adult self who easily rescues this child from a number of traumas, can the child see that big doesn’t require being fat.
Resetting the set point involves changing the subconscious mind’s image of what a healthy body should look like and feel like. Notice that the GI's in the above experiment were recently on active duty, so their inner minds had a clear idea of what a healthy body feels like. By contrast, many people need a new body image to create a new body. Without the power of hypnosis to plant these new images deep in the hypothalamus, it is unlikely that a 40 year old couch potato would be able to replace the inner habits of a lifetime of heaviness and inertia.
There are many other hypnotic strategies used to address the problems of eating and overweight. Often, there is more than one inner voice in each of these categories. Each must be addressed. These advanced techniques require time, dedication, and patience. (Any hypnotist that promises a short and easy road to permanent weight loss is whistling the same seductive tune as the diet industry.)
When we address the underlying causes of set point malfunction and set point override as outlined here, we can move a long way to making diet plans work for long suffering dieters. I support Sandra Aamodt in exposing the weaknesses of “The Diet”. Now let’s address those problems in the subconscious mind so that we can all discover the only diet that works: following the natural rhythms of the body and the healthy set point.
