Dementia. Alzheimers disease.
They steal our family members from us. We see their faces. Hear their voices. But they aren't there. No torment in my opinion could be more devastating. But there is hope. Recent research has indicated that there are ways to fight dementia. And my inner healer has also shared numerous tricks with me. I've suffered from a degree of absent mindedness, memory loss, and dyslexia all my life. And it's been frankly a source of embarrassment. Forgetting names of dear friends. Mixing up numbers names and directions. But at 72 my students are often amazed by the sharpness of my memory and mindfulness. I rarely mention it but ... me too! Here are some of my secrets: I don't have space here to outline the research and complex science behind them but hope they work as well for you in building your brain power as they did for me! Your brain is a massive consumer of sugar and uses 20% of our bodies sugar fuel! Yet it has few internal energy reserves so anything affecting blood sugar or circulation will affect thought processes and brain function. But eating refined sugars is the worst way to fuel your brain because it disrupts the delicate balance of blood sugar. Talk to your inner healer and your physician about natural ways to keep your blood sugar balanced. The minerals chromium selenium and zinc are important for this balancing act along with lots of B vitamins. Lecithin is a critical nutrient mix for "bulking up" your brain mass. Your brain is literally made of lecithin! Omega 3 oils and vitamins A D and E are also important ... and sorely lacking in the average American diet. B vitamins also keep our supply of neurotransmitters high. These are essential compounds for brain function. Meat is a good source of B vitamins. My diet seems to require a small amount. Very small. But the best diet for Preserving AND RESTORING brain power is a plant based diet high in fresh fruits and vegetables. And with a minimum of animal protein ... whether meat eggs or dairy. It is thought that too much animal protein creates complex chunks of junk protein that clog the brain with sludge. Experts have known for decades that exercising the brain with a variety of new mental challenges is the best way to preserve our brain power. Yes staying in the chess club is good. But developing NEW mental skills is critical as well. While physical fitness is important for Preserving brain power researchers have discovered that VARIETY in one's workout is more important than pure exertion. 20 reps of the familiar workout are less important than learning a new dance or sport. That's why I have found both mountaineering and martial arts and dance improv have been powerful tools in restoring my brain power. I learned from my polarity teacher Bruce Berger that regular stretching pulling and rubbing of the toes is important to mental clarity. When I first arrived in his clinic I was suffering deep mental fog. And when he tried to stretch out my rigidly twisted toes I screamed with pain. Now I rub and stretch my toes almost daily. The mental clarity is astounding. This is Ayurveda medicine. Amazing stuff! I suspect many forms of massage and bodywork may be helpful here. Dementia. We are all threatened by this unspeakable danger. But don't listen to the doctors who tell you to give up and wait for the drug. We don't have to wait for the pharmaceutical companies to come up with a drug. We are NOT powerless. Now you can save yourself and your family from the nightmare of dementia! Do what i did! Call your local Alchemist! Contact your or your loved ones inner healer. Find out now what steps you can take to preserve the minds of your family!
